This is a movie that heals broken spirits with loads of common sense. If you're feeling down because of all that is wrong today and could use a solid dose of inspiration, then watching this documentary could be just the ticket. This movie does not blow pink smoke and pretend to have substance, it actually has substance. It is human and honest, and the powerful voices you'll hear speaking are simply speaking the truth. I liked it a lot.

This documentary talks about the basis and history of Zen Buddhism and the social and cultural aspects that arise from Zen Buddhism. Zen Buddhism is very similar to traditional Buddhism where you can reach enlightenment and spiritual understanding through the method of meditation. Buddhist monks and nuns traditionally and modernly live a very simplistic form of life. All this can be achieved through the process of concentration, something that is very hard to master. Zen Buddhism differs from traditional Buddhism by how it affects society. From architecture like the way Japanese rooms are designed to martial arts where body and mind must be one, Zen Buddhism is more than just a religion, but a culture. The interesting part of the documentary is when it talks about how Zen Buddhism is not only applicable to Buddhists but also to other religions as well, it is something more than religion. Zazen teaches discipline so that the most peaceful state of mind can be reached and no other outside "forces" can distract the person. Personally, I believe that Zen Buddhism is not necessarily the lifestyle but the mindset that people need to strive for. We are living in a world with so much stress and violence that sometimes we don't even think about taking a break or spending time with our friends and family. Zen Buddhism is a great way to put one's mind at peace. Japan has the healthiest and oldest people living there, and Zen Buddhism might be the reason why they are able to live so long and healthy life.

'In God We Teach', a documentary by Vic Losick, highlights the controversy surrounding the topic of religion in the classroom. In Kearny, NJ, a student named Matthew LeClair took it to himself to try and "clean up the issue", by recording the teacher, Mr. Paszkiewicz's, talk on Christianity, and about being in hell or not depending on the students' faith. Both sides have their legitimate arguments, and use them to try and defend themselves. At the end, however, it is deemed that religion shouldn't be discussed about at all in Kearny High School. But what are the implications nationwide of this...? I thought that this documentary highlighted some major flaws within our (the American) education system, particularly about the separation of sciences and religion (e.g. evolutionist vs. creationist). This film does not focus on entertainment, but rather, focuses on informing the public of this controversial issue (in a fair way). Although monotonous and rather uncomfortable to watch at times (Paszkiewicz's religious views are too strong for me), this film had my attention throughout its whole montage, and I enjoyed it very much. Religion, obviously, has a major seat in this documentary. Many teachers and students alike are religiously Christian in America, and therefore, some think that because they are the majority, everyone should be Christian. However, laws, and the Constitution itself clearly define "the separation of church and state", and say so to defend the rights of the minority groups. America, the most religious Western country on the world, has reverberated as a result of this case in Kearny. Many religious students and teachers, and right-wing media houses have supported Paszkiewicz, while others and more liberal people have supported LeClair. But the reason behind the controversy isn't Paszkiewicz or LeClair; its about religion in school.
